Jul-Aug. 2011 / Alumni Newsletter

Newsletter Highlights by Carolyn Magee:

Just in case you have been trying to contact Beth at the new email address, please note the change above.   She had trouble with that number to remember (I did, too), so she changed back.   Sorry!

The last that I talked to Don, he has received only 3 registrations., so check out page 7 which has the registration and get   yours in.   Deadline October 1!! The registration will   be in the newsletter once more only. We want this to be a great reunion.   Remember a couple of things:   1)   Bring something for the auction.   2) The dinner/dance/banquet requires dress clothes.

Man,   have we had a time trying to get newsletters done and getting our family reunion together.   I am revising our genealogy book (Magee) called "Branching Out."   The last time this was done was in 2003 and since then, the data base has nearly doubled.   I have also received many new pictures of our family, so I had to revised those pages, as well as the layout of the new book.   When we tried printing from the old picture masters, the new printer made a mess. probably because the printer was picking up some shine off of the paper.   We decided to remake the old masters on plain paper; alas, the printer hooked up to that computer would not print color, and then we found that it was leaking black ink.   What a mess.   Consequently, we had to change out printers.   We finished that project, but that printer is hooked up to my address data bases and jams with envelopes, so now I have to do labels, which takes forever.   (That's the reason your envelope looks different.) The computer with those data bases   has windows 98 and it is hard to find a printer that is compatible with that program.   The woes of computers and printers, but don't know what we would do without them.   To top it off, my Print Master directory on the computer I use for your newsletters is corrupted.   I can't find anything without going to My Documents.   Then, when I started trying to print the genealogy data base, it wouldn't work.   Spent at least 30 minutes on the phone with a tech from the company--SUCCESS.   I had lost a file that enabled printing.   Anyway, when I get all of this family reunion stuff done, and it entails lots more than just a new book, I will start on making your name tags and updates for our VP8 reunion.   I think that we do too much.

Wild night out here in the boonies on Easter. My sister-in-law called and said, "Stay inside.   Don't open the door.    There's someone loose around here."   We didn't know for sure what was going on.   Brother-in-law said there were about 10 cop cars in front of his house and that they pulled a woman out of the car and caught one guy at Frank's mother's.   One took off across the woods.   So Frank goes around with his pistol, just to be sure, and I'm saying, "Please don't go outside."   I pulled all the curtains.   Didn't hear anything for a couple hours so we went to bed.   Newspaper said the cops were chasing the guy because someone said he was drunk, and when they tried to stop him, he kept going and threw beer bottles at them!.   Cops love a chase, I think, and they chased him from the city to the county and involved 3 or 4 law enforcement agencies!   The guy who got away turned himself in next day..   Learned later that he had run through the fields and woods in shorts and no shoes--through briars and fire ants and everything else.   Seems like much ado about nothing.   We've also had a sick raccoon roaming the place.   Finally some rain after most of the garden has come in.   Still have veggies, and tomatoes, Beth!!    Y'all come!

The new roster is loose leaf, so as you get changes from each newsletter. I suggest that you put a piece of notebook paper in the roster section and keep up with the changes as they come out--until a new roster is published.

The new roster is very different as it is divided into Sections.

SECTION ONE contains TAPS, the origin of the association, a list of reunions, the actual roster with an index, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and a map showing how many people we have listed from each state.

SECTION TWO contains the history of VP-8 along with lists of Commanding Officers.

SECTION THREE contains other interesting and important documents.
